six felines, all well into their later years and to many, just barely hanging onto their lives, grouped together, their heads low as they looked at one another. things had been going wrong for a while now. they had a leader named valentine, a tom that many believed to have been sick in the head, often complaining about pains left and right, who had been slain. the killer they had still received no word from the gods to identify. some believed that the gods might be going against them, leaving them to the whim of whoever might have it out for them.
"perhaps the aggressors are starting an attack finally?"
but everyone in the tribe merely shook their heads at the theory. aggressors had been trying to take down the tribe for as long as the tribe had existed, but they never could. they didn't work together - they were solitary. they just spat words at the tribe and mad threats they didn't back up. there was no threat from the outside - no real threat. but the elders looked at one another, worried that this might be something from the outside and if it was, well one of the gods had to be helping them and they all knew which of the gods that would be.
and since the death of valentine there had been one more leader gone. this one they had uncovered in a lake, floating in the water. one of the elders had gone out to retrieve it and brought the body back for them all to look at and what they would never tell the tribe was that this had been no accident either: the leader had been killed with a blow to the neck and then dumped into the water. they had to make the death look accident. two slain leaders in a row? that would only bring panic amongst the tribe.
"can we really keep this from them?" one elder, doubtful of the deception to the tribe asked the other five and the old felines, all who had wisdom from the lives they led looked at the one who had spoken.
"we have no choice, brother." the only female elder spoke back, her words dry and without emotion. she had always believed in the tribe and the gods. she had lived a life of having litter after litter when called upon and had been one of the few lucky enough to have the strength to live through them all until she could retire to this position. "we must protect them from themselves. with leaders getting slain, how do you think they will react. 'oh cool. well, let's just move on.' it's not that easy and you know it."
the first elder looked at the female and shook his head, but said nothing. he still did not agree, but looking around the circle he knew he was outnumbered. he was the only one that believed that the tribe had the right to know and he would never be able to convince the others. "then what do we do?" he asked in resignation.
one of the other elders, the oldest amongst the group, looked at the first elder and mewed, "the only thing we can do: ask the gods who shall be the new leader and hope beyond anything that this one does not die young."
the six elders all raised their heads, closing their eyes. each started to say a prayer to their individual gods, or goddess. "please show us the path we must take,. shoe us who shall lead us. please give us the name of the one you choose.
suddenly something flashed behind their eyelids and they opened automatically. then, a name so soft whispered in their ears: zephyros and an image of tom accompanied the name. they all looked at each other, each wondering if the had merely imagined what had happened...but they saw the same confusion that they felt in the eyes of all the others.
"Zephyros," the eldest said. "It's Zephyros." but if the gods had spoken...why did none of them feel comfortable with the decision? why didn't they feel safe about the choice?
only time will tell what is going to happen.
